A Prisoner at Korad

Captivity with Room to Move
Unusual treatment
The Tharks capture Carter but allow him more freedom than an ordinary prisoner because his strength and agility fascinate them. His status is unstable, depending on continuing to impress his captors.
First boundary tested
Carter tests whether Woola will stop him from leaving the city. Their encounter reveals that escape cannot be achieved by speed alone when a loyal guardian and an unfamiliar society stand in the way.
Freedom Inside Korad

A Prisoner Without Chains
Trust creates latitude
Carter earns a measure of mobility through fighting skill and the protection of Sola. His nominal captivity does not mean constant physical confinement, but the surrounding territory remains dangerous.
The cost of refusal
He takes responsibility for Dejah Thoris and challenges the limits imposed by the Tharks. Each act of independence increases his power while also making the leaders more alert to the possibility of escape.
Flight from Thark

A Route Chosen in Secret
A distant canal
Carter, Dejah Thoris, and Sola plan to escape toward a northern waterway rather than take the more obvious route. Their plan relies on speed, good animals, and Sarkoja not discovering them.
The rendezvous fails
Carter reaches the meeting place alone and learns that the escape has been exposed. He hides his thoats and returns toward Dejah Thoris’s quarters, converting flight into a rescue mission.
Captured by Warhoon

Escape Becomes Pursuit
Carter holds the rear
When Thark warriors find the fugitives, Carter remains behind to delay them. Dejah Thoris and Sola reach the hills, while Carter is overwhelmed and taken prisoner.
A new captor, new rules
The Warhoons carry him toward their own territory and the Great Games. He has escaped the Tharks’ immediate grasp only to enter a more openly lethal system of captivity.
Escape from the Arena

A Staged Death
Fighting for survival
Carter reaches the final contest with Kantos Kan and a giant Green Martian. The arena’s rules offer only one survivor freedom, forcing Carter to depend on a plan rather than ordinary victory.
Deception creates an exit
Carter and Kantos Kan stage Carter’s apparent death at dusk. Once the audience disperses, Carter slips away from the arena and begins his journey toward the canals.
